SME Numbers At Record High

A record number of small firms are currently operating in the UK, according to data revealed ahead of Small Business Saturday this weekend.

The statistics, from the Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy, found that small enterprises have contributed £1.9 trillion to the economy this year. The UK is now home to 5.7 million smaller businesses.

The Federation of Small Businesses (FSB) is urging people to go out this weekend and support local companies on Small Business Saturday tomorrow, which is now in its fifth year.

Consumers spent £717 million on small firms during last year’s Small Business Saturday, this was up 15 per cent against the previous year.

FSB national chairman Mike Cherry is happy to encourage shoppers to back their local firms, particularly when mounting financial pressures are forcing some small businesses to downsize or even shut up shop.

Michelle Ovens, director of Small Business Saturday, commented: “Small Business Saturday has become the biggest celebration of small businesses across the UK..

She added: “Our research shows over 90 per cent of small businesses believe they have an important role to play in their community – so let’s make sure we have their backs this weekend.”

The Credit Protection Association is always quick to offer support to SMEs, the undisputed backbone of our economy. While Black Friday was an opportunity for the large retailers, the upcoming Small Business Saturday will offer keen opportunity for SMEs to encourage business. We encourage all our Members to get involved in Small Business Saturday tomorrow, whether it’s as a business or as a consumer!
