UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson and Chancellor Rishi Sunak have penned a joint article to outline what they are calling “the single biggest tax cut in a decade” in a show of unity on the cost-of-living crisis. Writing in the Sun on Sunday, Johnson and Sunak said when the National Insurance threshold rises overnight this coming Wednesday from £9,880 to £12,570 it will save 30 million British workers up to £330 a year.

Gas

Norwegian offshore oil and gas workers went on strike, reducing output by 13% adding to the acute supply constraints across Europe caused by the Russian invasion of Ukraine

Sainsburys

Sainsburys said it expects pressure on consumers to ‘only intensify’. The board said it is investing £500m to March 2023 to keep prices low but like for like sales fell 4.5%.

DFS

DFS Furniture expects its annual profit will be in the upper half of earnings guidance.

International trade

US / China talks were constructive according to both sides. The US and China recognised the ‘world economy is facing severe challenges’ and it is of great significance to strengthen macro-policy communication. The US is considering changing some Trump era tariffs on Chinese goods
