A requirement to follow instructions from a sat nav is one of four changes that will be introduced, initially only to the car driving test, from 4 December 2017. The examiner will provide the sat-nav and set up the route and 1 in 5 candidates will be asked to follow road signs instead of using the sat-nav.
‘Driving test: cars’ links to video guidance and provides information on all aspects of the test, including the three following changes
- the independent driving section of the test has been doubled in length to 20 minutes. It includes driving without turn-by-turn directions from the examiner
- the ‘reverse round a corner’ and ‘turn in the road’ manoeuvres will not be tested, although learners should still be taught them. Candidates will be asked instead to do 1 of 3 specified reversing manoeuvres
- candidates will be asked a safety question while they are driving
‘Improving the car driving test’ lists the government response to the July 2016 consultation on the changes.
