Drivers of pre-2016 diesel cars and pre-2006 petrol cars will have to pay £24 to drive through central London on a weekday from 8th April 2019, under plans announced by Mayor Sadiq Khan for charging in London’s Ultra Low Emission Zone (ULEZ) – the toughest crackdown on polluting vehicles of any major city in the world.

The £24 per day charge will comprise the 24/7 ULEZ £12.50 pollution charge on top of the existing £11.50 congestion charge that applies from 7 am to 6 pm, Monday to Friday.

There will also be a £100 charge for buses, coaches and HGVs that do not meet the emissions standards to drive into the capital and the ULEZ charge will apply to all types of vehicle except black cabs. It is expected to cut emissions of nitrogen oxides from traffic pollution by almost half by 2020.

Initially, the ULEZ will apply within the same borders as the current congestion charge zone but ‘Have your say on changes to the central London Ultra Low Emission Zone’ * seeks views on proposals to extend it across Greater London for lorries and other heavy diesel vehicles from 2020 and to the North and South Circulars for cars and vans after 2021.
