Offenders who drive at speeds excessively above legal limits now face more severe penalties that ‘reflect the potential harm’ that can result as the seriousness of the speeding offence increases, under new sentencing guidelines for magistrates that came into force on 24 April.

In order to ensure there is a clear increase in the fine level for the most serious offences, fines now have a starting point of 150% of weekly income, rather than 100% as previously.

Examples where the new level applies include travelling at

  • 41mph or more where there is a 20mph limit
  • 51mph or more where there is a 30mph limit
  • 101mph or more on a motorway

Sentence levels for less serious speeding offences remain unchanged and the maximum fine for speeding remains £1,000 – or £2,500 on a motorway.
