How to improve cyber security in small businesses (UK)

Steps that a small business can quickly and easily take in five key areas to reduce the chances that it will become a victim of cyber crime are outlined in a new online guide published by the National Cyber Security Centre, a part of Government Communications Headquarters (GCHQ).

‘Cyber Security: Small Business Guide’ comprises an infographic identifying a range of low cost, simple techniques that can be applied in each of the following areas to significantly reduce the potential for financial and reputational loss arising from cyber attacks:

  • Backing up your data
  • Protecting your organisation from malware
  • Keeping your smartphones (and tablets) safe
  • Using passwords to protect your data
  • Avoiding phishing attacks

Each heading links to further information on the possible steps advised by NCSC.

For larger businesses, or those that face a greater risk of cyber crime, the guidance also links to 10 Steps to Cyber Security, published in August 2016.
