Licence Exemptions for Mobile Phone Repeaters (UK).
Two categories of mobile phone repeaters, which are used to boost and retransmit weak mobile signals, will be available for consumers to buy, install and operate on a licence-exempt basis (ie without a licence), under Ofcom proposals applying specifically to
- static mobile repeaters intended for indoor use
- low-gain mobile phone repeaters intended for use in cars and other vehicles
Mobile phone repeaters – also called signal enhancers or boosters – provide a solution for consumers who have difficulty accessing a mobile network from within their homes or vehicles.
However, their use is currently only authorised when they are supplied and operated under the control of a mobile network operator, as typical crude wideband repeaters can cause interference for other mobile users.
‘Mobile phone repeaters’ links to a consultation specifying that licence exemption would only apply to repeaters that meet Ofom requirements and wideband repeaters would remain unlawful.
