With recent events showing that terrorist attacks can occur anywhere without warning, the National Counter Terrorism Security Office (NCTSO) has drawn on support from the Centre for the Protection of National Infrastructure (CPNI) and more than 100 experts to produce new and updated guidance to help businesses and other organisations mitigate risks in the crowded places they own or manage.

‘Crowded Places Guidance’ provides interactive guidance to provide support to individual organisations operating in the following 12 sectors

  • night-time economy
  • cinemas and theatres
  • stadia and arenas
  • retail
  • health
  • education
  • places of worship
  • hotels and restaurants
  • major events
  • visitor attractions
  • commercial centres
  • transport

It is mainly targeted at those charged with security within these sectors, helping them  to assess the risks and develop a security plan that covers key areas of protective security such as physical, personal, personnel and cyber. It also aims to help them plan to recover more quickly in the event of an attack.

As the terrorist threat is evolving, the guidance has been designed as a living document that continually incorporates the best advice from leading UK experts and organisations. It also includes many links to websites providing specialist support in key areas.
