The 12-month transitional period that allowed retailers to sell off tobacco, tobacco products and e-cigarettes that do not comply with the Standardised Packaging of Tobacco Regulations and the revised EU Tobacco Product Directive ends on 20 May, when they must ensure all stock is compliant.

‘Standardised Packaging’ links to comprehensive guidance produced by the Association of Convenience Stores and backed by 2 posters that explain the regulatory changes to customers.

From 20 May, retailers may only sell

  • tobacco with standardised packaging
  • cigarette packs containing at least 20 cigarettes
  • roll your own tobacco with a minimum weight of 30g
  • unflavoured cigarettes and tobacco (excepting menthol cigarettes)
  • e-cigarettes featuring a health warning
  • e-cigarettes with a maximum 20mg/ml of nicotine (unless they are licensed as medicines)
  • e-cigarette refills with a maximum size of 10ml
  • disposable e-cigarettes, cartridges and tanks with a maximum size of 2ml

‘E-cigarettes: regulations for consumer products’ is the official government guidance on the rules and regulations introduced by the revised Tobacco Products Directive.
