With a wide range of organisations globally now affected by version 2 of the WannaCry ransomware, the National Cyber Security Centre has re-organised its WannaCry guidance into separate sections that each meet the needs of different audiences – including a section specifically aimed at small and medium sized businesses and home computer users, the latter of which includes many micro firms and self-employed.
‘Ransomware: Latest NCSC Guidance’ also links to a section designed to meet the needs of enterprise administrators and broader guidance on protecting organisations from ransomware.
NCSC is working with affected organisations and partners to co-ordinate UK responses to ransomware attacks and the guidance will be updated as more information is uncovered. Additional advice and guidance is also available online at CyberAware.
NCSC identifies the three main steps that small firms should take to protect themselves as
- update ‘Windows’ – Wannacry only affects computers running operating systems that don’t have the latest security patches installed
- make sure your antivirus product is turned on and up-to-date
- always create back-up copies of important files
