New vehicle tax rates are now in force for all cars and some motor homes registered from 1 April 2017. Tax for all vehicles remains based on their CO2 emissions for the first year and on the type of vehicle in subsequent years.

‘Vehicle tax rates’ lists in tabular form the first tax payments calculated on petrol/diesel cars and alternative fuel cars according to their CO2 emissions. It also lists the standard rates for the 2nd year, which are

  • £140 pa for petrol or diesel vehicle
  • £130 pa for hybrids, bioethanol, LPG and other alternative fuel vehicle
  • £0 pa for vehicles with zero CO2 emissions

There is an additional payment of £310 per year for 5 years (from the second time the vehicle is taxed), if the vehicle has a list price of more than £40,000 at first registration

As well as linking to additional information and associated services, the guidance includes separate sections covering

  • cars and light goods vehicles registered before 1 March 2001
  • other vehicles tax rates

‘DVLA webinar for fleet industry: information’ comprises a presentation and Q & A guidance explaining the new system for fleet operators.
