Omicron

England’s chief medical officer, Chris Whitty, warned that  Omicron was “moving at an absolutely phenomenal pace” and that a rise in hospitalisations was “nailed-on” as covid-19 cases hit an all-time daily high of 78,610 yesterday. Boris Johnson, resisted calls for tighter restrictions as 656,000  received their booster injections yesterday meaning 80% of vulnerable people have now had their third jab.

According to the university of Hong Kong, Omicron infects 70 times faster than Delta although the severity of illness appears lower.

With Covid cases hitting record levels and rising, employers are preparing for large numbers of their staff to call in sick or self isolate.

It’s not just the staff though. For those in the hospitality and retail sector, they have seen a huge fall in the footfall of customers, with many hospitality venues, who were hoping for a Christmas boost, instead suffering as customers cancel events. The CBI urged ministers to provide support “in lockstep with future restrictions”, while UK Hospitality called for business rates to be deferred and VAT discounts extended.

US Fed

The FED signalled they will raise interest rates next year at a faster pace and would also speed up the tapering of the bond purchases, boosting the dollar.
