SMEs unprepared for mounting threats

Small businesses in the UK are increasingly feeling the strain from cyber-security threats and economic instability, prompting many to consider restructuring. According to a survey by Kroll, less than one-third of British firms feel adequately prepared for potential challenges, with 27% of smaller companies feeling less equipped than a year ago. The survey revealed that 45% of businesses identified cyber threats as their primary concern, followed by 40% citing global economic instability. Sarah Rayment, managing director at Kroll, said: “Considering the domestic and international challenges… we anticipate a rise in distress among smaller to mid-market businesses.” Some 26% of firms are expected to undergo restructuring in the coming year, driven by profitability concerns, competitive pressures and the challenging economic environment.

Bailey alert to growth shock

The Governor of the Bank of England has expressed concerns over a “growth shock” affecting the UK economy due to Donald Trump’s trade policies. Andrew Bailey said that while he was hoping the UK could strike a trade deal with the US, as it is an open economy it would still be hit by a slowdown in global growth. Speaking to CNBC television, Bailey added that the Bank’s policymakers will have to weigh the risks to growth against an expectation of rapidly rising inflation. “We’ve got to balance those two. But I think the trade issue is the new part of that story,” he said.

Consumer confidence slumps as costs rise

The latest barometer of sentiment from the data company GfK shows consumer confidence in the UK has fallen to the lowest level for more than a year. Neil Bellamy, the consumer insights director at GfK, said that in addition to a raft of cost increases over April, consumers are now worried about rising inflation on the back of Donald Trump’s tariff negotiations.

Retail sales

UK Retail Sales rose unexpectedly in March to cap a strong first quarter for the UK consumer, providing a much-needed boost to the economy, official data showed this morning. Retail sales volumes rose by 0.4% in April alone, after downwardly revised growth of 0.7% in March, the Office for National Statistics said.

Markets

Yesterday, European markets were mixed, pausing after two consecutive days of gains, as investors weighed the latest developments surrounding Trump-era trade tariffs and a new wave of corporate earnings with the FTSE 100 closed up 0.13%  at 8414.09 and the Euro Stoxx 50 closed up 0.27% at 5112.57. Overnight in the US the S&P 500 rose 2.03% to 5484.77 and the NASDAQ rose 2.74% to 17166.04.

This morning on currencies, the pound is currently worth $1.3305 and €1.172. On Commodities, Oil (Brent)  is at $66.35 & Gold is at $3305. On the stock markets, the FTSE 100 is currently up 0.14% at 8419 and the Eurostoxx 50 is up 0.86% at 5159.

Alphabet shares (Google) are expected to rally later as they released expectation beating advertising sales numbers. The company’s overall revenue grew 12% year over year to $90 billion in the quarter, higher than the 10% Wall Street had expected.

Apple is going to move the production of most of its phones for the US market from China to India.

Meanwhile China is reportedly considering it’s 125% tariff on US imports to lower the heat in the US-China trade war. Donald Trump insisted that the US and China were engaged in trade talks, although China issued a denial that any such negotiations were taking place.

Tourist tax threatens London’s summer

London’s tourism sector is bracing for a challenging summer as high-spending American visitors are reportedly booking fewer trips. Business leaders are urging the Government to abolish the controversial tourist tax, which prevents foreign visitors from reclaiming 20% VAT on purchases. Recent data from VisitBritain indicates that forward flight bookings from the US are down 7% compared to 2024, with similar declines from other countries. According to the business group New West End Company, the absence of tax-free shopping has already cost the West End £640m in unrealised sales, as tourists opt for destinations where they can shop without VAT.

Wetherspoons loses cider VAT battle

Wetherspoons has lost its appeal against HMRC regarding a VAT dispute over cider, which the pub chain argued should not be classified as an ‘alcoholic beverage’. The case stemmed from a claim for £4.85m in overpaid VAT on cider supplied between 15 July 2020 and 31 March 2022. Glyn Edwards, VAT director at MHA, noted that the legislation defining ‘alcoholic beverages’ had failed to explicitly include cider. The First-Tier Tribunal ruled in favour of HMRC, stating it would be “anomalous and absurd” for cider to be treated differently from other alcoholic drinks. Edwards remarked: “It took three days in court and a 72-page written decision” to conclude that cider is indeed an alcoholic beverage.

HMRC confirms MTD for 2026

HMRC has announced that sole traders and landlords earning over £50,000 must adopt Making Tax Digital (MTD) for Income Tax by April 6, 2026. Approximately 780,000 self-employed individuals will be affected initially, with an additional 970,000 joining in 2027. James Murray MP, Exchequer Secretary to the Treasury, said: “MTD for Income Tax is an essential part of our plan to transform the UK’s tax system into one that supports economic growth.”

Higher taxes could see millionaires leave, Trump warns

President Donald Trump has expressed his reluctance to increase taxes on millionaires, saying that it could lead to wealthy individuals leaving the country. Some Republicans are considering raising the top tax rate for high-income earners to between 39% and 40%, up from the current 37%. Despite discussions within Trump’s inner circle, including Vice President JD Vance and Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent, the idea of a tax hike does not seem to be gaining momentum.
