The probate service has introduced a form that allows individuals to make personal online applications for probate in cases where
- only one executor is applying
- there is an original will to which the deceased has not left a codicil
- the deceased classed England or Wales as their permanent home or intended to return to live in either of them permanently
The online service will be extended for solicitors and other professionals later this year.
HM Courts and Tribunal Service will continue to develop the application form to cover a broader range of probate services but it currently includes
- a new statement of truth that removes the need for applicants to swear an oath in person
- a function to pay the fee online
- a ‘save and return’ function that allows an application to be saved and re-visited for completion at a later date
‘Wills, probate and inheritance’ and ‘Inheritance Tax and probate’ provide overviews of the probate process, while further details of the personal online service can be obtained from HMRC helpline.
