Views on the design and implementation of the locally-administered discretionary small business rates relief scheme announced in Spring Budget 2017 are being sought by the Dept for Communities and Local Government.

‘Business Rates: Consultation on proposals on the design and implementation of the locally administered Business Rates Relief Scheme’ (responses by 7 April) outlines proposals to allocate £300m to local authorities in England over the next 4 years. The aim is to ensure no small business coming out of rate relief will have to pay over £600 more this year than in 2016-17.

Ratepayers or localities facing the most significant increases and ratepayers occupying lower value properties will be prioritised.

In the Budget announcements, the £300m was part of a £435m package that includes a £1,000 business rates discount for one year for pubs with a rateable value up to £100,000
