The new polymer note featuring Sir Winston Churchill became the only £5 note with legal tender status on Friday, 5 May, when the paper £5 note featuring Elizabeth Fry was withdrawn.
Banks and building societies may continue to accept the paper note at their own discretion and it will continue to be exchangeable at the Bank of England in Threadneedle Street, London for all time. ‘Exchanging withdrawn Bank of England banknotes’ explains the exchange procedures for businesses, in person and by post, and for individuals.
