UK Business News Today: 6 November 2026 | Economy, Markets & Insolvencies
The weekend may be approaching, but there is little respite for businesses watching their costs. The Bank of England has raised interest rates to 4%, construction activity has contracted sharply, and higher mortgage bills are squeezing household budgets.
Meanwhile, a global sell-off in AI-related shares has unsettled financial markets. For SMEs selling on credit, the common thread is straightforward: when customers face tighter finances, protecting cashflow and staying close to payment behaviour become even more important.
James Salmon, Operations Director.
Key Developments
- Interest rates rise: The Bank of England raises Bank Rate to 4% as inflation is forecast to approach 5% in 2027.
- Construction under pressure: The UK’s construction PMI falls to 43.6, signalling a sharp contraction.
- Household finances squeezed: House prices decline and average two-year fixed mortgage rates climb to 5.97%.
- Global markets tumble: A major US technology sell-off spreads across Asian and European markets.
- More changes for employers and taxpayers: Higher taxes on savings and property income, salary transparency proposals and non-compete reforms are on the agenda.
Economy & Policy
Bank of England raises interest rates to 4% as inflation fears grow
Just when many businesses were hoping that borrowing costs might begin to ease, the Bank of England has moved in the opposite direction.
On Thursday, the Monetary Policy Committee increased Bank Rate from 3.75% to 4%, its first increase since August 2023. Eight members supported a quarter-point rise, while one preferred a larger increase to 4.25%.
The decision reflects growing concern about inflation driven by the Middle East conflict and elevated energy prices. The Bank expects inflation to reach approximately 4.9% in the middle of 2027 and does not anticipate a return to its 2% target until 2028.
Governor Andrew Bailey has warned that another increase could be necessary if energy costs remain elevated, although a lasting improvement in the Middle East situation could change the outlook. The Bank also upgraded its GDP growth forecasts to 1.6% for 2026 and 1.3% for 2027.
Why it matters: Higher borrowing costs, alongside rising energy bills, could place additional pressure on SME working capital and make it harder for customers to settle invoices promptly.
UK construction activity contracts sharply in October
The UK construction sector experienced another difficult month in October, with the S&P Global Construction Purchasing Managers’ Index falling to 43.6 from 46.1 in September.
Any reading below 50 signals contraction, making October’s figure a particularly concerning indication of weakening activity.
For contractors, subcontractors and suppliers, a slowdown can mean fewer projects, delayed purchasing decisions and greater competition for available work.
Why it matters: Businesses supplying construction companies should monitor payment performance carefully, particularly where customers depend on completing projects or receiving payments further up the supply chain.
Retail & Consumer
UK house prices record steepest annual fall since October 2023
Britain’s housing market is showing further signs of strain as higher borrowing costs and weaker affordability take their toll.
According to Lloyds, average house prices fell by 0.6% during October, following a 0.1% decline in September. The average UK property price now stands at £296,285.
Annual prices were down 1.2%, their steepest decline since October 2023, while prices fell 0.5% over the latest quarter.
Regional differences remain substantial. Northern Ireland recorded annual growth of 4.4%, followed by Scotland at 2.8% and Wales at 1.6%. Greater London experienced the largest decline, at 3.1%.
Lloyds expects subdued conditions in the near term but does not anticipate a sustained period of falling property prices.
Why it matters: A weaker housing market can reduce demand across construction, home improvements, furnishings and related services, potentially affecting sales and payment performance.
Mortgage costs rise by more than £2,000 a year
For households approaching the end of fixed-rate mortgage deals, the financial picture has become considerably more uncomfortable.
Moneyfacts reports that the average two-year fixed mortgage rate has climbed from 4.83% in January to 5.97%.
For someone borrowing £250,000 over 25 years, that represents approximately £169 in additional monthly repayments, equivalent to £2,028 annually.
Around 2.3 million households are expected to come off existing fixed-rate arrangements during 2027. Meanwhile, property sales agreed since spring are reportedly 8% lower than a year earlier.
Mortgage brokers are seeing growing demand from borrowers seeking to secure new deals early, while some homeowners are considering tracker mortgages.
Why it matters: Higher mortgage repayments reduce household disposable income, potentially affecting consumer spending and the finances of smaller businesses whose owners or customers face increased personal costs.
Tax & Government
Higher taxes on savings and property income from April 2027
Households receiving savings interest or property income face additional taxation under changes announced by HMRC.
From 6 April 2027, the supplied announcement indicates that rates on these income categories will increase by four percentage points:
- Basic rate: 20% to 24%.
- Higher rate: 40% to 44%.
- Additional rate: 45% to 49%.
HMRC estimates that 5% of taxpayers will face an average additional property income tax charge of £225, while 12% will incur an average increase of £113 on savings income.
These changes concern the specified savings and property income categories rather than an across-the-board increase in income tax on employment earnings.
Why it matters: Higher personal tax liabilities may reduce the funds available to landlords, sole traders and owner-managed businesses, particularly when borrowing and property costs are already increasing.
Employment & Labour
Government urges businesses to publish salaries in job advertisements
Businesses are being encouraged to include salary information in recruitment advertisements ahead of proposed legislation that would make greater pay transparency compulsory.
The Government argues that publishing salaries upfront helps jobseekers make informed decisions and could reduce pay discrimination, particularly among younger workers entering employment.
A consultation found that 94% of respondents supported greater transparency. However, Adzuna figures showed that only 51% of advertisements included salary information during September.
The Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development has cautioned that salaries often depend on an applicant’s experience, qualifications and potential, and believes employers should retain flexibility.
Non-compete reforms could reshape professional services
Government plans to reform non-compete clauses could make it easier for experienced professionals to move between employers.
According to reporting by Maria Ward-Brennan in City AM, the proposals could particularly affect senior associates and salaried partners in professional services firms, while equity partners may remain outside the changes.
The Government wants to improve labour mobility and help startups and growing businesses recruit experienced staff.
Further details are expected early in 2027, with challenger firms potentially gaining greater access to employees currently working for larger competitors.
Industry & Investment
Financial institutions move towards multi-agent AI systems
Financial services businesses are increasingly looking beyond individual artificial intelligence tools towards systems capable of coordinating multiple AI agents.
Capgemini Research Institute’s World Cloud Report for Financial Services 2027 found that 59% of institutions are piloting multi-agent AI, although only 10% have achieved full orchestration.
The research projects a 141% increase by 2028 in the prioritisation of business outcomes, reflecting a shift away from pursuing efficiency improvements alone.
Cloud infrastructure and hybrid sourcing arrangements are expected to play a central role in supporting more sophisticated applications.
International & Trade
Global AI shares suffer heavy losses as investors question investment outlook
After months of enthusiasm surrounding artificial intelligence, global investors have delivered a sharp reminder that even rapidly growing industries are not immune to sudden changes in sentiment.
American equities suffered substantial losses on Thursday, with the S&P 500 falling 4.36% and the technology-heavy Nasdaq 100 declining 6.36%.
Investors have become concerned that the Democratic victory in the US midterm elections could lead to greater scrutiny of AI infrastructure development, potentially slowing investment in new data centres.
Chipmakers and technology infrastructure providers were particularly badly affected. Nvidia, CoreWeave, semiconductor suppliers and specialist power infrastructure businesses came under heavy selling pressure.
However, the larger cloud operators, including Alphabet, Amazon, Meta and Microsoft, have proved comparatively resilient, reflecting their substantial existing infrastructure.
Asian markets tumble as technology sell-off spreads
Friday brought little relief for Asian financial markets as losses spread from Wall Street.
Japan’s Nikkei 225 fell 5.96% to 57,434.77, entering technical bear-market territory, while South Korea’s Kospi declined 6.02% at the close after falling more than 8% during trading and triggering a circuit breaker.
Taiwan’s Taiex declined 4.51%, with semiconductor manufacturer TSMC suffering particularly sharp intraday losses before recovering some ground.
Prime Minister Takaichi Sanae said Japan was monitoring whether the global technology sell-off would prove temporary or become more persistent.
Energy prices ease as hopes for Middle East diplomacy grow
There has at least been some encouragement from energy markets, where hopes of diplomatic progress over the US-Iran conflict have helped reduce wholesale prices.
European natural gas prices were heading for a weekly decline of approximately 15%, their largest in more than a year.
Brent crude stood at $97.67 a barrel on Friday morning, down 0.63% on the day, while US WTI crude traded at $89.82, down 0.77%.
However, the Bank of England has warned that previous increases in energy costs will continue feeding through to businesses and households. Many firms have fixed-price contracts that will only reflect higher wholesale costs when they expire.

The week’s central market development has been the rapid reversal in enthusiasm for AI-related investments.
US equities suffered their steepest falls since April 2025, with the Nasdaq 100 falling 6.36% in Thursday’s session, wiping an estimated $2.3 trillion from its market value. The broader Nasdaq Composite fell 5.52%.
The sell-off spread into Asian trading, where Japanese and South Korean shares experienced particularly heavy losses. European markets also opened lower, although their smaller direct exposure to AI-related companies helped contain the declines.
Investors are reassessing potential US regulation of data-centre construction, the financing of enormous technology projects and the outlook for semiconductor demand.
At the same time, energy prices, central bank decisions and the prospect of further geopolitical developments continue to influence confidence.
For ordinary businesses, the important point is not necessarily the value of technology shares themselves. It is whether a sustained deterioration in market confidence eventually affects borrowing conditions, investment decisions and customer demand.

Sterling weakened against the US dollar despite the Bank of England’s rate increase.
The dollar has attracted renewed support as investors seek relative safety during the global equity sell-off, reversing some of its initial weakness following the US midterm elections.
Against the euro, sterling remained broadly unchanged.
For businesses importing products or materials priced in dollars, a weaker pound can increase purchasing costs. Exporters receiving dollar payments may experience the opposite effect.

Oil prices edged lower on Friday as investors considered the possibility of diplomatic progress over the conflict involving Iran.
Nevertheless, crude remains elevated following disruption to supplies and shipping through the Middle East.
European natural gas prices were heading for a weekly decline of approximately 15%, although that does not immediately reverse the costs already flowing through the economy.
Gold also edged lower, with the strengthening dollar limiting its appeal despite nervousness in equity markets.
What this means for UK SMEs: The combination of higher borrowing costs, volatile exchange rates and unpredictable energy prices reinforces the need for realistic cashflow forecasts and disciplined credit management.

Keeping cash moving when costs are rising
There is a recurring theme running through today’s news. Borrowing is becoming more expensive, households have less room in their budgets, and some business sectors are experiencing weaker demand.
For businesses selling on credit, that creates an uncomfortable combination.
You may still be winning orders, making deliveries and issuing invoices, but none of that pays your suppliers, wages or overheads until your customers actually pay.
And when your own costs are rising, waiting an extra 30 or 60 days for payment can make a substantial difference.
This is why effective credit management matters particularly when economic conditions become more challenging.
CPA helps businesses protect their cashflow through CreditCare credit reports, debtor monitoring, credit control support and professional overdue-account recovery.
Our approach is designed to encourage prompt payment while treating customers fairly and preserving valuable trading relationships.
If a customer’s payment behaviour begins to change, it makes sense to act early. Review credit limits, monitor outstanding balances and address overdue invoices before they become more difficult to recover.
The objective is straightforward: keep the cash moving without damaging the customer relationships your business depends upon.
