Lack of energy resilience threatens UK businesses

The average UK business is risking £2.8 million by failing to have an energy resilience strategy, new research finds.

UK businesses are risking millions by not having a energy resilience strategy in place, according to a report from Centrica Business solutions. The report, based on a survey of 300 organisations across the UK and Ireland, found that around 17% businesses have been affected by blackouts and brownouts.

The report pushed the benefits of having a resilience strategy in place, with organisations more likely to have a good brand reputation and a strong financial performance.

Despite this, only 16 per cent of companies are making energy resilience a top priority and and an even further 32 per cent of businesses have no form of energy resilience strategy in place at all.

Alan Barlow, UK director of Centrica Business Solutions says, ‘It’s clear that businesses are unclear on how best to create a reliable energy strategy. Ignoring the risks can be very damaging.”

Barlow suggested back-up power systems and batteries should be used to avoid power outages and other issues.

The report revealed eight out of ten organisations experienced at least one energy-related failure in the past year, and almost one in four experienced equipment damage as a result.

Businesses simply aren’t ready for these failures, Barlow added, with one third of organisations unprepared for temporary grid failure.
