Parliamentary committee writes to six retailers over payment practices

The chair of the Parliamentary committee for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy has written to six retailers over concerns regarding their payment practices.

Morrisons, Aldi, Iceland, Lidl, Ocado and B&M were the six named and shamed retailers.

The influential BEIS committee has written to the six retailers asking why they are not signatories to a voluntary code which sets standards on paying suppliers.

Only half of the twelve  (Asda, Co-op, M&S, Sainsburys, Tesco and Waitrose – part of John Lewis) regulated grocery retailers in the UK are listed as signatories to the Prompt Payment Code (PPC).

The Prompt Payment Code sets standards for payment practices and best practice and is administered by the Chartered Institute of Credit Management on behalf of the Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy (BEIS). It covers prompt payment to suppliers, as well as wider payment procedures.

But Rachel Reeves MP, Chair of the BEIS Committee, has now written to the other six grocery retailers who are not signed up –  Morrisons, Aldi, Iceland, Lidl, Ocado and B&M – asking why they have not yet signed up to the code.

The letter follows a recent hearing with Christine Tacon, the Groceries Code Adjudicator (GCA). The hearing picked up on a range of issues relating to the remit of the GCA, including the treatment of suppliers and concerns within the industry about late payments and poor payment practices.

A BEIS Committee report released in 2018 recommended that “the government moves as soon as possible to require all medium and large companies to sign the Prompt Payment Code and quickly adopts a statutory limit of paying within 30 days”.

And in the 2017-18 Annual Report, the GCA noted that: “Delay in payments remained the number one concern highlighted by suppliers in the 2017 survey and continued to be an issue widely reported directly to the GCA by suppliers.”

It is hoped that Morrisons, Aldi, Iceland, Lidl, Ocado and B&M can be encouraged to sign up to the code and get them to promise to treat their suppliers better.

The Government has tried to pressure businesses to sign up to the code through the prompt payment initiative. However as the government doesn’t do a lot of business with the six retailers – Morrisons, Aldi, Iceland, Lidl, Ocado and B&M – this public letter is another way to pressure them up to the code.

Lets hope Morrisons, Aldi, Iceland, Lidl, Ocado and B&Mare listening.

However earlier this year it was shown that many of the big companies who have signed up for the code were ignoring it anyway.
