Further action to stop high-powered lasers entering the UK (UK)

A government pledge to ensure local authority teams working at ports and borders have the scientific, technical and testing expertise necessary to prevent high powered laser pointers from entering the country is the major outcome of a call for evidence* launched last year following an increase in the number of incidents involving laser pointers.

‘Laser pointers: call for evidence: Consultation Outcome’ sets out both feedback from respondents and the government response.

In addition to supporting local authority teams in carrying out increased checks and testing at borders to ensure any laser pointers they discover are safe, the government will also work with manufacturers and retailers to improve labelling so that it indicates the laser must not be pointed at eyes or vehicles and also states the power level of the product.

The government will also work with e-bay and other online retailers to improve the policing of online sales.

More than 150 incidents of eye injuries involving laser pointers have been reported since 2013. The Civil Aviation Authority received reports of 1,258 laser incidents in 2016, with Heathrow the main airport at risk and laser incidents against trains are also a concern, with approximately 96 incidents a year being reported.

The vast majority of incidents involve children and in many of these cases, neither the children nor their parents were aware of the risks involved. The government will also work to raise awareness of children and their parents.
