Research from Tech City, the Government-backed organisation for the technology industry, found that the majority of technology workers are coming from outside the single market.
This goes some way to soothe fears that Brexit will lead to a digital skills deficit in the UK, while also dispelling claims that our exit from the EU will leave tech start-ups starved of talent.
The report used data from LinkedIn to analyse the spread of workers with technology skills that entered the UK last year. The focus was widened to include people working in aerospace, telecoms and healthcare.
India provided the majority of workers, with 12 percent of technology workers arriving in the UK last year originating from the country. The US and Australia were close behind with 10 percent and 7 percent respectively.
The Government recently boosted the number of special visas made available to non-EU tech workers, which the industry says are likely to become more important after Brexit.
Ministers are attempting to boost technology companies in regions across the country. They recently funded Tech City, which was set up as a London-focused organisation, to set up a network of regional hubs and to rebrand itself as “Tech Nation”.
