Clarifying the use of 07X numbers (UK)
Changes to the National Telephone Numbering Plan * have been proposed by Ofcom to clarify that 07X numbers are to be used only on mobile phones and other mobile apparatus and not used to identify call forwarding, call conferencing and other services on fixed apparatus.
The proposals are Ofcom’s response to concerns that, while 07X numbers are widely associated with mobile phones, their association with other services is much less well known.
This could put at risk consumers’ understanding of the range of calls accessible on 07X numbers and the cost of accessing them – both central planks in Ofcom’s policy of simplifying the use of non-geographic numbers.
‘Clarifying how mobile numbers can be used by Communications Providers: Proposed modification to the National Telephone Numbering Plan’ explains how Ofcom proposes to simplify the designation so that 07X numbers may only be used to identify the destination of an electronic communication service where it is received by mobile apparatus – typically a mobile handset.
It also proposes to change the definition of ‘mobile services’ in the NTNP to ensure that it reflects the way mobile services are provided today.
