Construction Industry Concerned For EU Workers
The UK construction industry has warned that the sector faces a Brexit ‘cliff edge’ if the Government doesn’t provide more details on its plans to implement a two-year grace period for EU citizens looking to apply for settled status after the exit.
A report jointly published by seven of the construction industry’s largest trade bodies on Wednesday, calls on the Government to provide greater detail of its proposals, giving EU nationals more certainty about their future.
This is a response to a paper released by the government last month. This outlined the details of a two-year grace period for EU nationals to apply for settled status once the UK leaves the EU.
The Federation of Master Builders said the decision to leave the EU had left the UK construction industry facing a “cliff edge” in terms of its access to EU workers.
Brian Berry, chief executive of the federation acknowledged that the industry needed to increase attention to home-grown talent, but insisted that there remains an ongoing need for migrant workers.
Nelson Ogunshakin, chief executive of the Association for Consultancy and Engineering further stressed the importance of migrant workers, stating that the skills these workers bring to the industry are vital to the national infrastructure.
Ogunshakin warned that the referendum has already impacted the industry, with increasing numbers of EU staff leaving the UK for jobs on the continent.
“This will only get worse if we do not bring certainty to EU workers’ residency rights,” he added.
The Credit Protection Association recognises the importance of migrant workers in the UK, particularly those from the EU. With Brexit negotiations prolonging the uncertainty, all sectors are feeling the pressure. The CPA urges our Members in the construction industry to keep communications wide open with EU workers, make sure you are both prepared for whatever outcome the negotiations bring.
