Factory Output Rises

Manufacturing output soared during September, according to new data.

Figures released from the Office for National Statistics have shown that the sector grew by 0.7 per cent in September, compared to earlier in the year. This was more than double of what was expected.

This growth was driven by big rises in the production of computer, electrical machinery and equipment. Computer equipment output was 9.7 per cent higher than than the previous month, indicating a hightened demand.

Ruth Gregory, UK economist at Capital Economics, suggests the industrial sector is providing an offset to consumer slowdown.

The trade deficit has widened which Ms Gregory called “disappointing reading” but insisted that the rise in good exports is a good sign,  and believes the strength will continue.

This was good news for the manufacturing sector, but construction workers weren’t so lucky.

ONS also found that construction output saw  a sharp decline, with new commercial work falling in numbers partly due to an increase in house-building.
