May Achieves ‘Breakthrough’ Deal
8th December 2017.
In a small step towards clearing the country of Brexit uncertainty, Prime Minister Theresa May has finally struck a last minute deal with the European Union to allow her to move on to the next phase.
Theresa May has struck a deal with Brussels, hoping to gratify the EU, the UK and the Irish Government. This should allow May to move on to talks with the EU about future trade conditions, which are of most concern to UK businesses. .
European Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker said “the breakthrough we needed” had been achieved, after months of negotiations.
The UK will now have around a year to hammer out an agreement on future relations, which will have to be ratified by the EU nations and the UK Parliament, before the UK leaves in March 2019.
Northern Ireland’s Democratic Unionist Party, whose opposition on Monday led to talks breaking down, said there was still “more work to be done”.
What has been agreed?
- May has pronounced that EU citizens living in the UK- as well as UK citizens living in the EU- will still have their rights protected after the UK exits the EU. This includes EU citizens who do not have residential status, and the Government will allow them the space to achieve it even after Brexit. If this is approved by the European Commission Summit on Thursday it will be welcomed by many UK employers; many of whom were concerned for their EU workers and the prospect of losing a vast majority of their workforce.
- May has also agreed not to invoke a ‘hard border’ between Northern Ireland and the Republic, allowing trade and relations between the two regions to remain harmonious. Similarly this will please employees in the UK and Ireland who will not have the added inconvenience, and expense, of border control.
- The long debated divorce settlement with the EU has been decided, and May has stated it is “fair to the British tax payer”. Environment Secretary, Michael Gove has refused to declare the final amount, but has claimed it is lower than the £48 billion that was reported in the press.
