MoJ Spends Millions on Digital Courts
4th January 2018.
The Ministry of Justice is spending tens of millions of pounds to help deliver online and digital court programmes.
The Ministry of Justice (MoJ) is paying £30 million to professional services firm, PwC, as part of a £1 billion drive to modernise the courts and expand the types of hearings that can be conducted via computer.
Few details are known about the scheme, except that it is being managed by the MoJ’s executive arm, HM Courts and Tribunal Service (HMCTS).
There has been fierce criticism over the spending of such large sums at a time when legal aid is facing further cuts, and courthouses and prisons are in dire need of repair.
PwC will be expected to spend a considerable proportion of their fee on suppliers and contractors, as well as the training of current staff to aid understanding of the new software.
An HMCTS spokesperson has called it the most ambitious programme of its kind anywhere in the world. He further added how it would make a “swifter, more accessible and more efficient justice system” for the public.
Civil cases such as divorce and small claims have already been transferred online, along with low level offences such as traffic offences and fare evasion. More than 3,000 members of the public are said to have used pilot digital systems so far.
There remain concerns that online justice forms could cause issues for unrepresented defendants, who may plead guilty too quickly without considering their criminal record.
