New strategy sets out anti-corruption priorities (UK)

Reducing the insider threat in high risk domestic sectors such as borders and ports and reducing corruption in public procurement and grants are two of the six priorities for this parliament in a new government strategy that establishes the framework for tackling domestic and international corruption over the next five years.

Other priorities highlighted in ‘UK anti-corruption strategy 2017 to 2022’ are

  • promoting integrity across the public and private sectors
  • strengthening the integrity of the UK as an international financial centre
  • improving the business environment globally
  • working with other countries to combat corruption

In the longer term, the strategy sets out a vision for anti-corruption action that will lead to

  • reduced threats to national security
  • stronger economic opportunities (particularly for British businesses)
  • greater public trust and confidence in our institutions

Complementing the strategy is the appointment of John Penrose MP as anti-corruption champion, with responsibilities including the promotion of the UK’s response to corruption at home and abroad.

The Home Office has also announced that a new economic crime centre will be created within the National Crime Agency to draw on expertise from across government, law enforcement, criminal justice agencies and the private sector to tackle money laundering –which, according to the Home Office, costs every household in the UK £255 pa.

The formation of the new centre is a key element in a package of measures that includes an enhanced operational capability created by new legislation that will allow NCA to directly task the Serious Fraud Office with investigating the worst offenders.

A new economic crime strategy board chaired by the Home Secretary and involving ministers from across government will agree strategic priorities in the allocation of resources to law enforcement agencies.
