Retailers pledge not to sell harmful corrosive substances to under-18s (UK)
The British Independent Retailers Association (BIRA), which represents thousands of hardware stores across Britain, has joined Waitrose, B&Q, Morrisons, Wickes, Co-op, Screwfix, Tesco and other major high street retail brands in backing government proposals for retailers to pledge voluntarily not to sell the most harmful corrosive substances to under-18s.
Part of the Acid Attack Action plan announced by the Home Office in July 2017, the commitment proposed by the government requires retailers to
- apply Challenge 21 and 25 policies * when asking for age identification
- support staff by till alerts, supervision and including corrosive products in age-restricted training
- apply equivalent age restriction measures to products sold online
- comply with the Poisons Act 1972 and promote awareness to staff of what this means for the sale of products which contain levels of acid and other corrosive substances which are either regulated or reportable under the Act
‘Sales of acid: voluntary commitments for retailers’ links to a document listing the corrosive substances that are causing concern and outlining the set of voluntary commitments.
The site also provides contact details for retailers wanting to sign the commitment and access to graphics that they can use to promote their support for it.
The Home Office has also commissioned the University of Leicester to carry out major research into the motivations of offenders who carry and use acid in violent attacks.
Other measures introduced under the Acid Attack Action Plan include
- making it an offence to possess a corrosive substance in a public place without good reason
- introducing a minimum custodial sentence for those repeatedly caught in possession of a corrosive substance in a public place without a good reason
* Challenge 21 and 25 were introduced by the British Beer and Pub Association to help prevent young people from accessing age-restricted products.
