UK Less Attractive For Immigrant Workers in 2018

18th January 2018.

The numbers of immigrant workers are dropping, and according to new research, this could have an effect on how much workers are paid. As the Brexit waters become murkier by the year, fewer people are travelling across oceans to work here. Not only is this going to have an effect on our domestic conditions but it’s a major signifier on the negative image we are presenting to the world. Or at least to the world’s job seekers. While discussing this issue with our members at the Credit Protection Association, we see all sectors are feeling the pressure. We encourage all employers to pay close attention to their immigrant employees and make sure you’re both prepared for whatever the outcome in 2019.

In a speech on Wednesday, Michael Saunders, a member of the Bank of England’s Monetary Policy Committee, said that a fall in immigration levels and the fall in the value of sterling, may soon lead companies to raise workers’ pay.

This is likely to change in the year ahead, however, as recruitment difficulties rise, lifting pay growth.

Mr Saunders blamed the affected immigration levels on Brexit, but also on the strong competition from other large economies such as Poland and Hungary, who are reducing the appeal of foreign employment.

The Bank employee also recommended higher levels of investment and training within the UK to “catch up” with the growth levels of the US and Germany.

Higher interest rates will be needed if pay growth does not start to pick up, Mr Saunders warned, adding that the Bank’s quarterly Inflation Report, due out on Feb 8, will include more detailed analysis.

Immigration workers in the UK are falling, as is our ranking around the world. Once seen as one of the most desirable places to live and work, it is now overlooked in favour of more powerful economies.  Here at the Credit Protection Association, we urge our members to keep communication wide open with your immigrant workers. Make sure they know how much they’re appreciated in the workforce and how they will be treated after the Brexit deadline. One of the major issues with the fallout of Brexit has been its uncertainty, so don’t allow it into your workplace. Talk to one our staff at CPA for help and advice!
