“My Wife Was Seeing Aliens So I Couldn’t Pay My Taxes!”
18th January 2018.
HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC) have released some of the weirder excuses for why people haven’t filed their tax returns. One taxpayer claimed that their wife had seen aliens, which had stopped them from sending off their return, while another claimed his performance in a one-man play had prevented him from making a trip to the post office. This list was released ahead of the January 31st deadline when all online tax returns have to be completed. The Credit Protection Association has encountered its own share of questionable excuses, and we urge our members to fill out their taxes on time, as well as take any excuses directed towards them with a pinch of salt.
HMRC recently released some of the more outlandish excuses people have come up with for not filing their tax returns, as well as unusual items taxpayers have claimed as expenses.
Angela MacDonald, HMRC Director General of Customer Services, said: “Each year we’re making it easier and more intuitive for our customers to complete their tax return, but each year we still come across some questionable excuses”.
“It is unfair to make honest taxpayers pick up the bill for other people’s spurious claims, so HMRC will only accept sincere claims such as legitimate expenses for a job”, she added
Some of the more bold excuses were spilt beverages on paperwork, sufferers of vertigo who couldn’t make it upstairs to their desk, and even the claim that their business doesn’t do anything. Among the expense claims, people claimed for three-piece suites for spouses, birthday drinks, vet fees, and even a claim for the same meal for 250 days.
Here at the Credit Protection Association, we hear a tirade of the most ridiculous and bolden excuses for non-payment. These can range from simply “the invoice got lost in the post” to “I’ve moved to Timbuktu and don’t have access to a postbox”. With each excuse, you get more discouraged and more resigned to the outcome. The Credit Protection Association always encourages its members to put up a strong defence against such customers- even if they are seeing aliens. If the customer doesn’t want to pay, if they refuse to pay, then you bring in CPA. We have heard it all. We will do all the work and bring that money back to your account.
