Gender Pay Figures Revealed

8th January 2017.

Women are paid less than half than men at some of Britain’s major companies, new gender pay gap figures have revealed.

Ahead of the April deadline 527 companies have released their gender pay figures. This includes big names such as Ladbrokes, Easyjet and Virgin Money.

This is in a bid to close the gender pay gap between men and women and to enhance gender equality in the workplace.

According to the new statistics, female workers at Easyjet are paid 52 per cent lower than men, while at fashion business Phase Eight, hourly pay for women is 65 per cent lower.

Easyjet has explained that most of its female staff are cabin crew, who are paid the lower wages. At present, only six percent of higher-paid pilots are women; the airline has set a target for a fifth of new entrant pilots to be women by 2020.

They insist women and men are still paid for the same work.

This was similarly seen in fashion chain, Phase Eight, where the majority of male employees have jobs in head office and rarely in shops.

While the clothing chain has admitted the majority of their lower-paid shop workers are female it insists their head office staff are more evenly split between men and women.

Some organisations have in fact been found to pay a higher hourly rate to women, including Cambridgeshire Police,  where female workers earn 13 percent more than men.

Furthermore, at Unilever UK, women earn 9 per cent more than men, and at Evans Cycles women earn 6.5 per cent more.

All organisations with 250 or more workers have until April to publish their gender pay gap statistics.
