Small business confidence is at a five-year low

 

Confidence among small businesses reached a five-year low this month, according to the Small Business Index (SBI) compiled by the Federation of Small Businesses (FSB).

 

The share of small businesses reporting a fall in profits in the fourth quarter hit a five-year high of 42% and the number reporting an increase in profits reached a five-year low of 27%.

 

The survey of more than 1,000 small businesses, which was carried out by the FSB in late November and early December, also showed that 46% of small businesses expected their performance to deteriorate over the next three months. Just 24% of small firms said they expected performance to improve over the coming quarter.

 

Government needs to deliver on its commitments, FSB says

 

The economy was seen by businesses as being the main barrier to their expansion, and was identified as such by nearly two-thirds (64%) of the small firms surveyed.

 

Craig Beaumont, the FSB’s director of external affairs, said: “The small business community has been stifled by uncertainty for more than three years. This quarter, the added uncertainty that accompanies a general election made it even harder for small firms to plan, hire and increase profits.”

 

He observed: “The incoming government has made some very positive commitments to the small business community – particularly where connectivity, employment costs, business rates and late payments are concerned – it now needs to deliver.”

 

Moribund hiring ‘is a real concern’

 

Meanwhile, only one in 10 small firms said they planned to hire staff in the next three months – the lowest share for five years.

 

Craig Beaumont said: “The fact that we’re seeing hiring intentions drop off so dramatically is a real concern. The need for this government to deliver on its promise to cut the jobs tax by increasing the employment allowance is a very urgent one.”

 

Managers aren’t optimistic about the economy

 

Elsewhere, the Chartered Management Institute (CMI) reports that many managers expect to receive a pay rise in 2020, but their optimism about the UK economy had only increased from 25% to 29% between 2018 and 2019.

 

Ann Francke, the CMI’s chief executive, said: “Our managers are a vital barometer for business as a whole. It’s good news that our members are positive on issues like salary increases and job security, but it is concerning to see so few respond positively about the outlook on the economy.”

 

“This should act as a trigger for the Government to invest in management and leadership skills in order to turbo-charge the economy and restore the confidence of British businesses,” she said.

 

1,200 SMEs seek loans over Christmas

 

Evidence of the poor financial position of many SMEs is out there.

 

Data from loan firm Iwoca shows that more than 1,200 small business owners applied for a loan between Christmas and New Year’s Day, with almost 300 applications across Christmas Eve, Christmas Day and Boxing Day and 135 applications on New Year’s Day.

 

Iwoca notes that applications between Christmas Eve and New Year’s Day were up 5% on the same period last year.

 

It also revealed that in H1 2019, 55% of small businesses applied for finance out of hours, with a third of applications coming at weekends.

 

Seema Desai, chief operating officer at the company, said that with SME owners facing “ever-increasing demands on their time,” demand for finance outside of traditional banking hours is climbing as firms “seek greater flexibility in how they access financial support.”

 

Financial admin keeps microbusiness bosses awake

 

The financial stress is getting to business owners.

 

A third of microbusiness owners say their personal lives are affected by the volume of financial administrative tasks they face, with research from Starling Bank showing that such firms spend the equivalent of ten weeks every year sorting out their finances.

 

The study saw 11% of microbusiness owners say the matter had left them sleepless, while one in twenty said that it had made them ill.
