Brexodus is “Nonsense”!
The numbers of European Union citizens working in the UK has shot up to record levels this year, according to new figures from the Office for National Statistics.
Despite fears of an outflow of EU workers (‘Brexodus’), official figures have showed that 2.28 million EU nationals were working in the UK between July and September this year. This is 112,000 more than the previous year.
Despite claims that the UK leaving the EU has created an uncomfortable environment for EU nationals, more new arrivals are settling here.
Since the referendum there have been various stories claiming that EU workers are feeling under threat and returning to their home countries. NHS in particular was reportedly under threat by large numbers of departing EU employees.
These new ONS figures have shone a new light on the situation.
According to the survey, more than seven in every 100 people working in the UK are EU citizens.
Polish and Eastern European workers, as well as those from Romania and Bulgaria, have seen a particular increase in the UK.
The Migration Watch UK research organisation, reported that EU citizens were comfortably settling in the UK, and doubted to see any of them rushing to leave.
Migration Watch spokesman Alp Mehmet called ‘Brexdodus’ “nonsense”, but doubted this inflow was having much of an effect on the economy, with many Romanian and Bulgarian workers going into low-paid jobs.
Overall the ONS figures once again confirmed that employment figures have dropped this year. This has raised questions about the resilience of the labour market but has provided a welcome boost to productivity.
