Employment surges as Britain’s economy survives fall in the pound

The number of people in work in Britain rose by 102,000 in the 3 months to November 2017 to a record 32.2 million reveals the Office of National Statistics, confounding a Reuters poll of economists that predicted a fall of 13,000.

Full time jobs accounted for most of the increase, with workers aged 50 to 64 the major beneficiaries of job creation.

While the economy slowed in 2017 as inflation caused by the post-referendum fall in the pound reduced consumers’ spending power, the much bigger slowdown forecast by economists also proved to be wide of the mark.

Workers’ earnings, excluding bonuses, rose by 2.4% pa in the 3 months before November, which was the biggest increase since December 2016. Pay growth including bonuses was unchanged at 2.5%.

ONS statistician, David Freeman, commented,

“With the employment rate returning to a joint record high and the number of vacancies setting a new record, demand for workers clearly remained strong.

“Nevertheless. inflation remains higher than pay growth and the real value of wages continues to decline.”
