Female Entrepreneurs, How Can We Help Them?

When it comes to starting a business, there remains a notable disparity between the sexes. Encouragingly, the gender gap is closing – but there is still more work to be done.

Clare Beaumont-Adam, a senior strategist from Independents United, spoke to The Independent newspaper about the small number of female entrepreneurs in the UK.

Ms Beaumont-Adam urges that the UK is playing catch up with its global counterparts. She refers to recent research by Natwest where Canada was found to hold the highest number of female entrepreneurships at 13.5 percent. The UK lags behind at a “disappointing” 4.7 percent

She proudly discusses Independents United’s recent programme which has given businesses an “eye-opening view” into some of the challenges in the area. Running since 2015, The J&B Hive offers young creative entrepreneurs in Johannesburg the tools to grow their business ideas.

However, even Independent United has faced obstacles, as she identifies a 20 percent decline in the number of women applying for the programme.

Firstly, and quite simply, the “visibility of females is crucial to support”, she urges. According to her research, an exclusively male or male-dominated environment is a more intimidating environment for the women.

Ms Beaumont-Adam’s solution is to ensure a level of female representation right across the board, from the management team to the profiles shared on social media.

External partners should also be encouraged. Independents United worked closely with She Leads Africa, a community that helps young African women achieve their professional dreams, and Ms Beaumont Adams is happy to see this having a positive impact on the women, and the men, involved.
Nonetheless, she acknowledges that more work needs to be done.
Recent research from Deloitte found that fewer than 6 percent of working-age women are currently engaged in entrepreneurial activity compared to more than 10 percent of men.
The senior strategist insists that by putting the right supporting structures for female entrepreneurs in place, however, the nation’s bottom line could be boosted by £100 billion over the next ten years.
