Fox Faces Reproach For Export Comments
Liam Fox has revived his battle with British business, complaining that it “doesn’t want to export”.
The International Trade Secretary has once again put himself at war with UK firms. Liam Fox was criticised for his comment a year ago where he called UK business leaders “too lazy and too fat” and more interested in spending time playing golf than securing exports.
This time Dr Fox has limited his criticisms to small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs). He recently told The House magazine that SME’s alleged reluctance to export is damaging trade agreements with international companies.
Dr Fox appreciated that the government had given small businesses a “modest push” and admitted the recent 13 per cent increase in exports this year was a promising start. However Fox believes more needs to be done, and the economy is way behind where it needs to be.
The Prime Minister does not share Dr Fox’s distrust in British business, and Theresa May has pledged continued government support to exporters.
Other officials have fought back against Fox’s comments. The Liberal Democrats recently accused Liam Fox of blaming British businesses for his own failings.
Tom Brake, the party’s spokesman on Brexit, said: “This is particularly galling for the many businesses that export to Europe and will lose access to the single market because of the extreme Brexit the government is pursuing.
“Liam Fox has racked up thousands of air miles without securing a single trade deal. UK businesses shouldn’t be held responsible for the fact he can’t deliver on his Brexit fantasy”, he added.
