Mandatory CCTV recording in slaughterhouses (E).
16th November 2017.
Official veterinarians will have unrestricted access to CCTV footage recorded over the preceding 90 days in all English slaughterhouses, under new legislation supported by 99% of almost 4,000 respondents to a consultation on proposals published by the Dept for the Environment, Food and Rural Affairs.
‘Animal welfare: CCTV in slaughterhouses’ sets out the government response to the August consultation on pro- posals to make CCTV mandatory in all areas within the slaughterhouses where live animals are present.
Access to the recordings will support the work of vets, who are specially trained to make sure the welfare of animals is protected. If breaches are found, slaughterhouses can be given welfare notices or referred for criminal investigation, while their staff can have their licences suspended or revoked.
Slaughterhouses will be given six months to adjust to the new legislation, which will be introduced in the New Year as soon as Parliamentary time allows.
