Maximum penalties increased for two ‘causing death’ driving offences (E, S, W)

The maximum penalties for causing death by dangerous driving and causing death by careless driving while under the influence of drink or drugs will be increased from 14 years to life, under proposals announced by the government following a consultation that revealed considerable support for proposals to strengthen the sentencing powers available to the courts.

After considering more than 9,000 responses to the consultation, the government also proposes to create a new offence of causing serious injury by careless driving.

‘Driving offences and penalties relating to causing death or serious injury’ links to the original consultation, which ran from 5 December 2016 to 1 February 2017, and sets out proposals aimed at deterring dangerous and criminal behaviour on UK roads.

It also links to the consultation responses and an update from the Ministry of Justice outlining the government’s proposals.
