MoD Pledges to Encourage Small Business And Export Drive

21st December 2017.

The Ministry of Defence (MoD) is introducing new measures to help companies sell their products abroad, as well as encourage more small companies to get involved.

Gavin Williamson, the new Secretary of State for Defence, will reveal a “refresh” of the defence industrial policy, where businesses will be engaged earlier and concentrate on delivering wider economic benefits to the UK.

An early focus on the “exportability” of products is a special focus of the updated policy, with new products being developed with international demand in mind, and supported by foreign sales campaigns.

To help get more SMEs involved in the sector as well as larger companies who can deliver innovative products, contracts are also being simplified.

Mr Williamson said: “We are British industry’s biggest customer and we are committed to exporters and SMEs to ensure they and our military remains the envy of the world.”

The strategy comes just as the UK’s defence spending comes under massive pressure. The 10-year plan set out in the 2015 strategic defence, which pledged to spend £178 billion on military transport, is in danger of becoming unaffordable.

Worries about a funding black hole have been exacerbated by the fall in the Pound since the EU referendum.
