New online service proposed for reporting road accidents
Drivers could soon be able to report accidents online under Dept for Transport proposals that aim to free up police time and ease the burden on motorists, who currently have to report a crash in person at a police station within 24 hours, which may mean taking time off work.
Many police forces already allow victims to report crimes online and extending this facility to the reporting of road accidents will reduce queues at police stations, where 20% of 130,000 personal injury accidents and 55,000 damage-only accidents are reported each year.
Most road accidents are, however, recorded by an officer at the scene. In addition to consulting on the proposal to allow online reporting, the Dept for Transport has also developed a new Collision Reporting and Sharing System (CRASH) app that will be distributed free to all police forces.
Designed for use on a hand-held device, CRASH will allow officers to fill in accident details at the scene with accurate locations, speeding up the reporting process and making it easier for highways authorities to access the accurate data they need to plan safety improvements.
