Proposals to extend licensing hours for Royal Wedding (E, W)
Licensed premises in England and Wales will enjoy a £10m cash injection this year if Home Office proposals to extend licensing hours in order to allow more time to celebrate the wedding of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle become law.
The £10m boost for the licensing trade was projected by the British Beer and Pub Association when it was announced that the Home Office is seeking views on proposals to extend evening licensing hours on Friday 18 and Saturday 19 May until 1.00 am the following day.
‘Relaxation of Licensing Hours for the Royal Wedding’ sets out proposals for an extension that would apply to all premises in England and Wales which are not normally licensed until 1.00 am. It would be brought into force by a licensing hours order made under Section 172 of the Licensing Act 2003.
Precedents for extending licensing hours to enhance celebration of events of national significance include the Queen’s 90th birthday, the wedding of Prince William and Kate Middleton and the 2014 World Cup.
While this latest Royal Wedding will coincide with the FA Cup Final, there have been no reports of increased disorder during previous extensions – which included Euro 2016 matches involving England and Wales coinciding with Her Majesty’s 90th birthday and extensions during the World Cup, 2014.
