Recovering and re-using industrial heat (E, W).
Workshops at Birmingham (31 October), Darlington (15 November) and Cardiff (21 November) are the centrepieces of a consultation that aims to test the proposed design of an ambitious programme to promote and support the recovery and re-use of industrial heat that would otherwise be wasted.
Through the ‘Industrial Heat Recovery Support Programme’, government aims to increase industry confidence in identifying, and investing in, opportunities to recover waste heat from industrial processes and increase the deployment of recoverable heat technologies.
Successful heat recovery projects can allow industry to cut their energy bills by re-using the recovered heat on site or create a new income stream by selling it to a 3rd party. The programme is estimated to have the potential to slash industry energy bills by up to £0.5bn and achieve 6m tonnes of carbon savings.
The workshops have been jointly organised by the Dept for Business, Energy & Industrial Strategy and the Knowledge Transfer Network (part of Innovate UK). In addition to testing the proposed design of the programme, they aim to
- gather additional evidence on the enablers and barriers to recovering industrial waste heat to ensure the scheme maximises value for money
- commence identifying a potential pipeline of demonstrator projects from across industry sectors
The workshops will be particularly relevant to representatives from process and manufacturing companies, trade associations, technology providers, energy service companies and academia but all interested parties are welcome to attend. Full details are available via the above weblink.
