SMEs Narrow Gender Gap Further
The gender pay gap among small and medium sized enterprises (SMEs) is falling at twice the rate as that of all companies across the UK, according to new research.
The report, conducted by small business advice service Informi, found that while the national gender pay gap was at 21 per cent ten years ago, current wage inequalities amongst SME employees has fallen to 13 per cent, compared to a national average of 17 per cent .
Real estate activities reported the best narrowing of the gender pay gap, while the construction industry showed the least improvement.
Darren Nicholls, product manager for Informi, urged the importance of SMEs in the report, insisting that their advancements in equality demonstrate how they are “blazing” a pathway towards wage equality.
Chloe Chambraud, gender equality director for Business in the Community, insists gender equality will only be reached by a big culture shift. Chambraud called for reduced bias in the workplace, more transparent recruitment and promotion processes and fair parental leave packages for men and women.
The Credit Protection Association is pleased to see SMEs storming ahead with gender equality in the workforce. They are the lifeblood of the UK economy so their advancements will hopefully influence larger companies to follow suit. The double digit gender gap is still too large, so we encourage our Members and clients to follow Chloe Chambraud’s suggestions for a fair, transparent and open-minded workplace.
