Tax-free childcare scheme opens for parents of under 9s (UK)
Tax-Free Childcare is now available for working parents (including those who are self-employed), whose youngest child was under 9 or turned 9 on 15 January – which means they can claim a 20% rebate (£2,000) on the annual cost of childcare up to £10,000 for each child and a 40% rebate (£4,000) for each disabled child.
HM Revenue and Customs launched Tax-Free Childcare on 21 April 2017 and the 15 January extension to children under 9 was the penultimate stage of a roll-out that will conclude on 14 February when eligible families with children under 12 will qualify.
Since the childcare service through which eligible working parents with 3 and 4 year old children apply for 30 hours free childcare as well as Tax-Free Childcare opened last year, more than 325,000 customers have successfully applied and more than 170,000 of them now have a Tax-Free Childcare account.
