Tech Giant Caught Snooping
Google is facing legal action on behalf of millions of people in England and Wales over allegations that it unlawfully collected individuals’ personal data.
A consumer campaign group has launched unprecedented legal action against Google accusing them of bypassing default privacy settings on the iPhone’s Safari browser
In the first mass legal action of this kind in the UK, the tech giant is facing legal action on behalf of 5.4 million people in England and Wales.
The case, which will be heard in the High Court in Spring 2018, is being led by ex-Which director Richard Lloyd and his Google You Owe Us campaign group.
“In all my years speaking up for consumers, I’ve rarely seen such a massive abuse of trust where so many people have no way to seek redress on their own. Through this action, we will send a strong message to Google and other tech giants in Silicon Valley that we’re not afraid to fight back,” said Mr Lloyd.
Lloyd has estimated that affected users could be paid “a couple of hundred pounds each,” which would be given to individuals automatically without having to pay legal fees or contact any lawyers.
Google says it plans to contest the claim. A spokesperson said: “This is not new – we have defended similar cases before.
Google faced the same issue in the US back in 2012, leading to a pay out of $22.5 million in a case brought by the US Federal Trade Commission.
